Cantina Crawl

Available year-round by request.

Join Chef Mario at his favorite spots in Merida.

The Mexican cantina has been the stuff of legend and lore for generations – even more so once Hollywood got its hands on the subject! Hell holes of smoke and prostitution? Or family-friendly restaurants with live entertainment? Certainly, today the answer lies somewhere in between. Because local health codes require that any restaurant serving alcohol must also serve food, Yucatecan cantinas dish up dozens of small plates of free food with every beer. Most of the offerings are traditional Yucatecan fare – papadzules, sikil p’aak, pimitos – but you may also receive the odd plate of spaghetti here and there.

Our unique “Cantina Crawl” will take you into three or four of the most (in)famous in Mérida. While those daunting swinging doors may be too intimidating for many outsiders to breach, the cantinas we will visit are safe, clean, comfortable – and delicious. Your only challenge will be to pace yourself – either with the beer or the botanas, or perhaps both! Native-born and experienced cantina crawler Chef Mario Canul will serve as the perfect introducer to this experience.
