Guadalupe Day Special

Available December 12

On this day, San Cristobal – the impressive church a few blocks from the central market – becomes the destination for thousands of guadalupanos – runners who sprint carrying torches in honor of the birthday of the Virgin of Guadalupe. Fireworks, food and other festivities make this one of Mérida’s most colorful celebrations. And be sure to watch for little boys who dress as Juan Diego, the peasant who witnessed the Virgin’s miraculous apparition. Since this is considered the “kick-off” to the Christmas celebrations, we’ll prepare a variety of tamales and other holiday treats typical of Yucatán cuisine.
